For three decades, Susan Levy Eisenberg has been one of the top matrimonial attorneys in Bucks and Montgomery counties. She has an excellent reputation as an experienced, caring advocate. "Matrimonial law is a very specialized field," she relates. "Having the right lawyer can make or break your case."

Susan points out to her clients that if both parties in a divorce case fight like cats and dogs over every single issue, "The lawyers rack up their fees." She relates that "As an advocate, you want to aggressively pursue your client's claims but you do it in a rational and reasonable manner. The best course of action for an attorney, in a matrimonial action, is to protect your client's rights while you resolve their case quickly and amicably, if possible. You litigate when you have to, but you point out to your clients that a trial is the last and most expensive resort."

She notes that in a matrimonial case the most important and personal issues of a person's life are at stake, such as children, money and assets like the marital home. It is a very emotional situation, and the clients need someone that they can lean on and trust. If the clients get too emotional, they will feel it in their pocketbook. Susan tells her clients to: "Let me handle the stress for you, that's what I'm here for."

Susan says "As your advocate, I come up with a plan to protect your interests. If a financial advisor is needed, we call them in. I discuss with my client what is worth litigating over. I help the client make informed decisions about what they can expect if they take several different paths with their case. I have extensive trial experience, and I give my best opinion to the client as to whether the case will have to go to trial or if an amicable resolution is possible."

She points out that a person just thinking about ending his or her marriage should contact an attorney for advice. "If you act too late then the other party can rush to close bank accounts, cancel credit cards and empty safe deposit boxes."

It is very important for a person to really know their financial situation. "Don't just sign the joint tax return, get a copy of it and read it over. Check out the credit card statements. Know what your monthly expenses are. If the kids are in school, do you know what it costs per year?"

Custody, visitation, child support, spousal support and the distribution of marital assets are all topics of interest that must be resolved. "You must remember," Susan states. "In a divorce you're sharing your child's time, and splitting your assets and your income. The lawyer's job, as your advocate, is to get you out as whole as possible."

Susan is an advocate of counseling for parents and children who are going through a divorce. "There is a psychological impact here for all parties involved. A good, caring therapist can be invaluable to a family in turmoil and can help them cope."

When asked to describe her manner in handling matrimonial cases, Susan says "I try to be empathetic and I try to be there for the client to work with. I am very conscious of the cost of a divorce and I strive to protect my client's money. I make myself available to my clients because I know how draining the entire process is. I'm tough if I have to be, but I always try to get the other side to see that there can be a better way. I am very lucky to have such a caring staff and I think that I have a great location for my office in Newtown."

She points out that, "In life, the greatest emotional trauma, short of death of a loved one, is going through a divorce. If I can protect my client and make them as whole as possible at the end of it, then I have done my duty to them."
